Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf of Cardiff are through to the last eight of the rugby league Year 11 Champion Schools competition after beating Manchester’s St Mary’s Catholic High School 38-6 in Loughborough on Thursday.

Glantaf will now travel to Hull to face Malet Lambert School in a tie to be played by March 1st.

The other Welsh side in the national Year 11 knock-out competition, Aberdare Community School, lost 48-34 to London-based school Hinchley Wood in Maidenhead.

The draw for the national Champion Schools last 16 has been made in the Year 7, 8 and 9 categories.

In year 8, both schools are Welsh speaking and are from Cardiff. Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern will take on Grey Court School from Richmond in London, whilst Glantaf will face Rainford High School from St Helens.

In year 9, St Joseph’s Roman Catholic High School from Newport will face Surrey’s Howard of Effingham, whilst Swansea valley’s Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera take on St Mary’s.

Glantaf and Howard of Effingham meet in the last 16 of the Year 10 competition with Ystalyfera taking on Wigan’s St John Fisher Catholic High School.

WRL development coach Peter Tiffin said: “Since receiving my new position with WRL, it was one of my many goals to make sure that we get fully involved with the schools, and make sure that the support and guidance from Welsh competitions all the way to national rounds, was there from us.

“It’s great to see so many schools wanting to be back involved with our competition this year. We are lucky to have six different schools over the five separate age categories this year in the Champion Schools, one I managed to travel and help this week as Glantaf successfully went through to the quarter finals at year 11 category.

“We are also in the process to create a brand new schools competition this summer.”
