Wrexham Hopes Can Be Fylde Under ‘Unlikely’

Wrexham hopes of promotion back to the Football League are hanging by a thread.

The Dragons have had a dreadful run of form – six points from the last 24 on offer – and most beat AFC Fylde convincingly to give themselves a chance of going up.

That much is at the Racecourse on Saturday (3pm).

They are also banking on Boredom Wood, in seventh place, losing at home against bottom club Guiseley.

Wrexham’s chances are remote, but manager Andy Davies says: “It is a long shot, but first and foremost Saturday’s game is making sure that we are professional and have some pride in our performance.

“Fylde will need the three points themselves so it is looking like they will come and attack us and we have got to match that and do the same and try and bow out with a win more importantly.

“It is about being professional, we have to be professional in our performance and our manner, and we will be.

“We’ve let ourselves down over the last month or so. Saturday is about restoring that pride, and for the fans as well, and making sure the last game of the season the fans go away with something to cheer about and three points hopefully.”

“For us it is about picking a team to go and win the game, which we’ve tried to do for all the games, so that won’t change. It is not a matter of changing and mixing people about, it is about picking a team which we feel will go and win the game against Fylde on Saturday.”

Wrexham are likely to be without injured top scorer Chris Holroyd again.

It looks certain that Wrexham will miss out on promotion, while Davies says it is important the Dragons appoint a new manager as soon as possible to give the players, both in and out of contract, some clarity.

Wrexham’s search for a new boss began following the decision of Dean Keates to join League One side Walsall last month.

“The club are in the process of trying to appoint a new manager, that is underway, but I don’t know where that is up to,” said Davies.

“I think they have openly said they want to appoint a manager as soon as possible, whether that is next week or the week after, but it will be as soon as possible.

“Certainly for the players out of contract that will give a bit of clarity to them and their futures, which is important, and it is important for the football club to have someone in place to take on the work that has been done this season.

“The early season form was good, we got ourselves in a good position, but we have let ourselves down the last month or so. “That is where we are at, hopefully the manager will be in place as soon as possible to move things forward.

“You have to remember the season as a whole has been an improvement on 2016-17.

“If we are being totally honest, to me it is a failure in that we haven’t got to where we want get.

“The football club needs to be tougher as a whole. I said that the first day I got here. It is a work in progress and has improved.  “Hopefully the new manager will take it by the scruff of the neck and things will move on again.

“But the football club has taken a massive step in the right direction this season. From that point of view it is a positive, but if I am totally honest from where we were, in the hunt for the title, it is a massive failure if we don’t get in the play-offs.”
