Wrexham Aim For Clean Sheet Heaven In Hampshire

Wrexham stand top of the Vanarama National League and in pole position to earn automatic promotion.

There is a long way to go, but the Dragons have kept four clean sheets under new manager Sam Ricketts and are level on points with Gateshead and Sutton United.

Defender Manny Smith, a key player for Wrexham in their case for promotion, says: “Every player is buying into what the gaffer is about, what he is doing and where we want to go as a club.

“Everyone knows how I feel about the club and how my time has been here and what I would like to do here.

“I am always enjoying my football, always prepared for every game and getting the club out of this league is hat drives me on.

“Almost a perfect start but the main thing is we are not getting ahead of ourselves.

“We have made a good start ,but we each have our own targets and we have got a target as a club.

“We have just got to take it one game at a time and not get carried away.”

Wrexham kept a club record 22 clean sheets last season and have set a new Dragons’ best by not conceding a goal in their first four matches.

Unbeaten Wrexham won 2-0 at home against Maidenhead on Tuesday, thanks to goals from Mike Fondop and Jordan Maguire-Drew, and confidence is high.

“We are not getting carried away, it is only four games in,” says Chris Holroyd.

“It always helps having a good start and just gets the feelgood factor going.

“We all believe it as a squad. There is quality throughout and we have just got to keep performing.”

Wrexham’s first game as leaders is against Eastleigh at The Silverlake Stadium in Hampshire and manager Ricketts says: “It is four games, 10 points and a good start, but it really means nothing.

“We have to push on and go again.

“There is no let up and no time to reflect. You reflect at the end of the season.

“There are things we need to get better on and keep working on. That will be the case the whole season.

“We want to keep pushing and keep improving, but we have got the team-spirit, character and will to win.

“We are managing to win games at the minute and yet I am still saying there is an awful lot to improve on.”

Ricketts, who inherited 12 players from last season and made new eight signings in the summer, feels Wrexham will soon be playing at the intensity he wants for full games.

“The eight new players have gelled really well and that is testament to the lads already here and the character of the lads coming in,” he said Ricketts.

Eastleigh’s team includes former Newport County striker Chris Zebroski, who has scored 10 goals in 31 starts for his team.

Former Gillingham and Orient manager Andy Hessenthaler is in charge of Eastleigh, the town made famous by Southampton-born Benny Hill’s ‘Fastest Milkman in the West’ song.

Wrexham midfield player Luke Young did not play against Maidenhead because of a dead leg, but could feature this weekend, while defender Kevin Roberts is recovering from an illness.
