WPL Weekend Scoreboard: Evans Rescues Point For Cardiff Met Against Carmarthen

Eliot Evans signed off the 12th round of the JD Welsh Premier League in spectacular fashion as he fired Cardiff Met back into the top-six.

Evans crashed home a stunning 73rd minute volley from the edge of the area to rescue a point for his side, who were struggling to break down a dogged Carmarthen Town side.

Carmarthen, looking to avoid a fifth-successive league defeat, forged an unlikely first-half lead against the run of play when Liam Thomas converted from the penalty spot, following Kyle McCarthy’s challenge on Mael Davies.

Carmarthen’s defensive resolve held firm against sustained pressure from the hosts.

And it was not until Eliot Evans fizzed Chris Baker’s knock-down into the top-left corner were Cardiff Met able to break down the Old Gold.

Aberystwyth Town had temporarily pushed their way into the top-half after goals from Ryan Wollacot and Geoff Kellaway restored their lead on route to a 3-1 win over Llanelli, who remain two points adrift at the bottom of the table.

At the top of the table, The New Saints maintained their one-point lead at the summit after a controversial penalty decision allowed them to draw at Newtown.

Newtown, fourth, took an early lead as young striker Ethan Jones scored his first of the season for the Robins.

With 15 minutes remaining, Newtown defender Kieran Mills-Evans was adjudged to have brought down Greg Draper just inside the area. Draper, the league’s leading scorer, made no mistake from 12-yards to claim his 11th of the season.

Connah’s Quay, playing Friday night, would’ve have regained their lead at the top of the table if they had not squandered the opportunity to claim all three points against Caernarfon Town as the two sides played out a goalless draw at the Oval.

Barry Town were the big movers this weekend. Their victory over Bala Town not only ended the hosts 100 per cent home record but moved them to within a point of The New Saints.

Wales U21 international Momodou Touray fired Barry in front inside the opening ten minutes at Maes Tegid. Barry’s lead looked in doubt when Bala Town were awarded a second-half penalty but Chris Venables blazed his spot-kick over.

Llandudno snapped a run of five-match losing run with a goalless draw against Cefn Druids.
