Newtown captain Craig Williams says his team’s spirit can push them on to finish the seasons strongly ahead of tonight’s match against Bala Town at Maes Tegid (7.45).
Bala have not played a WPL game in six weeks after a combination of a postponement, a match being abandoned and an enforced fixture rearrangement have left the Lakesiders playing catch-up.
They finally begin their Phase 2 campaign against a Newtown side, who climbed to fourth in the table following last week’s win over Caernarfon Town.
Williams scored a freak goal, scoring directly from a corner, to open the scoring in that game. January signing Rio Ahmadi hit-back immediately after Caernarfon had taken a 2-1 lead, before Alex Fletcher fired Newtown back in front as the Robins rallied late on to seal the win.
“We have had team spirit and resilience for a number of seasons here at Newtown and that was another great example of that last week. We will use that togetherness we have to push on for the remaining games of the season,” said Williams.
“This is a very important match in terms of our season, we want to finish as high in the table as possible and be competitive in every single match. Points are crucial at this stage of the season so a very important game for both teams.
“They will be desperate to get out there as they haven’t played for a while but we have match fitness in our legs having played regularly of late, so hopefully that pays off when we kick off.”
