Welshman Emyr Evans and England’s Patrick Rooney fought out a fiercely contested match in the Welsh Open Squash Championships at Rhiwbina SRC.
The two young squash professionals battled it out for 69 minutes before 20-year-old Rooney, from St Helen’s, emerged the winner.
Cardiff-born Evans, 21, was desperately close to victory and led 2-1 before Rooney tied things up in a tense and dramatic fourth game.
He edged it 13-11 and eventually won 7-11, 11-7, 6-11, 13-11, 11-4.
The match between top seed Mohd Syafiq Kamal (Malaysia) and Michael Harris (England) was also decided over five games. Kamal snatched victory 11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 in just under an hour.
Number one seed Peter Creed, the Caerphilly-born competitor who plays out of Rhiwbina SRC, earned his place in the last eight with a straight games win against Jamaican Vini Rodrigues.
Defending champion George Parker made progress and will face Jordan’s Ammar Altamimi in the last eight.
