Welsh Women Ready For Thai Test After Hitting Magnificent Seven Past Singapore

Wales face a crunch game with Thailand on Tuesday in their Women’s Hockey World League campaign in Kuala Lumpur.

Head coach Kevin Johnson saw his squad recover from a 3-0 opening defeat against Italy with a 7-0 thrashing of Singapore.

Wales face Thai opponents who are one place ahead of them in the world rankings before the knock-out classifications games start on Thursday.

Lisa Daley and Phoebe Richards both scored twice against Singapore with skipper Abi Welsford, Sarah Jones and Natasha Marke-Jones adding the others.

Kevin said: “I am delighted with the response after we knew we could and should have been better against Italy in a few key areas.

“We showed great energy and desire throughout and scored six goals from open play, which was a target for us to improve on.

“The quality and clinical nature of our finishing at times will hopefully give us both confidence and momentum going into our next challenge.”

Welsford, who made it 5-0 from a penalty corner, praised her team-mates for responding in style after the defeat against Italy.

She said: “It was really nice to bounce back with such a strong performance after a slightly disappointing performance yesterday against Italy.

“We definitely stepped up our game and it was great to convert our dominance into seven quality goals.”
