Welsh Vibe For Wizards In Premier Squash Opener

Welsh Wizards will include four home-grown players on their Premier Squash League debut against London club Coolhurst at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.

There is a major Wales vibe to the Wizards team, led by World number 12 Tesni Evans and current Welsh champion Peter Creed.

Wizards have taken the chance to feature top Welsh talent in a team competing at the highest level of league squash in the World.

Wales have a rich tradition of success at this level with the Leekes Welsh Wizards and Dunraven Windows Maesteg both crowned British champions.

Commonwealth Games medalist and British champion Evans and Rhiwbina-based Creed are backed up by Emyr Evans, Tesni’s brother, and Elliott Morris Devred, both among the leading young players in Wales.

Spanish ace Edmon Lopez completes the five players for Wizards’ opening league fixture.

World number three Marwan ElShorbagy was due to make his debut for Wizards against Coolshurst, but has had to make a trip back home to Egypt and is unavailable.

“It’s exciting to be playing for the Wizards,” says Tesni Evans. “I heard about the Leekes Wizards and Maesteg years ago. Any Welsh player wants to play in Wales.

“There will be a really good attendance on Tuesday and the Welsh fans will be right behind the team.

“We all believe Wizards have a pretty strong team.

“Wizards playing at PSL level  can only help us grow even more. It’s another avenue to promote our players.

“We have a number of players in Wales capable of playing in the league.

“Squash Wales have been trying for a while to get into the league and it’s come at a good time.

“It’s already getting bigger and people are talking about it. It can only help raise our game.”

Wizards’ match against Coolhurst is already sold out and the match is certain to create a massive atmosphere as World class squash returns to Wales.
