Wales have two players through to the Commonwealth Games squash semi-finals on the Gold Coast.

Rhyl-based Tesni Evans won in four games against England’s Laura Massaro to set up a last four clash with Australian Sarah-Jane Perry.

Wales number one men’s player Joel Makin, from Pembrokeshire, then battled to a five-game victory against Scot Alan Clyne.

The reward for Makin is a semi-final against New Zealand’s Paul Coll.

Clyne and Makin fought out a desperately close match in Australia with the Welshman edging to a 12-10 win in the fifth.

In a tense, bruising and exciting finish Makin swept into a 6-2 lead during the fifth set before Clyne clawed his way back.

The match lasted 99 minutes before Makin, recovering from 2-1 down, snatched victory 11-9, 4-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10.

The men’s last four includes an Englishman, a Malaysian, a Kiwi and Welshman Makin, while the women’s semi-finals feature Wales champion Evans plus an English player, Malaysian and Joelle King from New Zealand.

England’s Nick Matthew crashed out against Nafilzan Adnan.
