Hawkins Double Leads Bulls Charge To Victory At Cardiff

Cardiff Athletic 20 Bridgend Blue Bulls 30

Bridgend Blue Bulls bounced back from their defeat at the weekend by overcoming a valiant Cardiff Athletic side at Glamorgan Wanderers.

Nicky Giles slipped through the Cardiff defence to give Bridgend a 15th minute lead, converting his own try. Stuart Robson went over in the corner to increase the lead to 10-0.

Cardiff got back into the game after half an hour when Jack Perry made a clean break to the line to score. Morgan Cochrane converted.

Nathan Hawkins broke through for Bridgend’s third to increase the score to 14-6 but Cardiff hit back again with a Morgan Rowlands try right on half-time to make it a four-point game before getting the leveller 12 minutes into the second half.

However they were only level for less than two minutes. Brodie Watkins made a powerful run to the line to give Bridgend the lead back.

Dan Forrester increased the advantage with a try that Giles converted to take the score up to 24-14 to Bridgend, but Cardiff weren’t finished yet, Rowlands going over for his hat-trick and Cochrane converting.

Bridgend sealed the win three minutes from the end after Hawkins scored his second and Giles converted.

This Saturday sees Cardiff Athletic travelling to Cwmbran to face Torfaen Tigers (kick-off 2.30pm) with Bridgend having the weekend off.

Rhondda Outlaws host Valley Cougars at Sardis Road, Pontypridd (kick-off 2.30pm), in a match that immediately follows a referee’s course. Any budding refs can sign up for the course now by emailing paul.chambers@walesrugbyleague.co.uk.

The remaining game in the Premier League sees Llanelli Knights host Valley Cougars at New Dock Stars (kick-off 2.30pm).

It’s part of a big weekend in the town with a double header being played on Sunday at Stebonheath Park where the Knights host Penlan Wild Stallions in an under 13 encounter (kick-off 10.15am) before a Betfred League 1 game between West Wales Raiders and Newcastle Thunder (kick-off 1pm).

Also on Sunday, there is a triple header planned at Cwmbran RFC where Torfaen Tigers meet Bridgend Blue Bulls at under 17, 15 and 13 levels, whilst at Glamorgan Wanderers RFC it’s Cardiff Blue Dragons v Aber Valley Wolves at 15s and 13s.
