Wales have earned their place among the best 16 squash nations in the World.

Number one Joel Makin and his Welsh team-mates defeated Czech Republic 3-0 today and finish second in their group behind Australia.

Both progress to the knockout stages where Wales play hosts France at Modern Squash, Marseille.

It is the first time Wales have been in the last 16 since 2007 and they play France on Thursday (probably at 7pm at Salle Vallier, to be confirmed).

World number one Gregory Gaultier leads the French challenge and they have beaten Canada and Ireland 3-0 in the group stages.

Makin, from Pembrokeshire, Peter Creed and Emyr Evans played for Wales against the French team.

Cardiff’s Evans won 3-0 against Jakub Solnicky in 41 minutes (11-9, 11-6, 16-14).

Rhiwbina Squash Club’s Peter Creed was taken to four games by Martiun Svec, emerging the winner 11-7, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10 in 48 minutes.

Makin swept to a straight games success against Daniel Mekbib in 36 minutes, winning 11-3, 11-9, 11-7.

David Haley, from Newport, is the fourth Welsh player in their squad.
