Chris Venables believes the Wales C squad will be ready and firing to go ahead of tonight’s Wales C international against England C at Barry Town’s Jenner Park tonight (7.30).
The Bala Town midfielder was named in Mark Jones’ initial 18-man squad last week and is expected to feature in the Welsh starting line-up.
“I think we’ll be very well prepared, it is obviously going to be a huge challenge against a very strong side,” he told the FAW official site, speaking from their south Wales base.
“It would be fantastic if we could get a win, which is obviously what we’re looking to do. I’m not seeing it as an exhibition game or a friendly or anything like that, and we’ll be going there for one thing and that is to try and win the game. A positive result would be absolutely fantastic, and what better team to do it against than England?”
The C side will consist of players that must be Welsh eligible and playing their football within the Welsh pyramid structure. England will be managed by non-league veteran Paul Fairclough and their squad will comprise of players aged under 23 who play in the National League System.
Jones and his assistant, ex-international, Owain Tudur Jones have had five training sessions to prime the squad over weekend after plans for a squad training camp in mid-Wales earlier this month were hit by bad weather.
The withdrawal of in-form Barry Town striker Kayne McLaggon to injury will have been a blow to their initial plans but Venables feels that the improvement of the domestic game in recent years can serve Wales well and success at C level would improve the perception of the Welsh Premier League.
“I think the JD Welsh Premier League at present is as competitive as it has ever been. The style of football has evolved massively in recent years with different things coming into play with the new pitches and football has changed in this country a lot because of that.
“Going forward, fixtures like this will certainly raise the profile of the league and continue to improve the standards and perception of it. So, it’s certainly a very good thing and something that needs to be continued in the future,” added the 32-year-old.
Tickets for the game are still available from Jenner Park.
