Triathlon Ace Non Gets Nod For GB’s European Championships Team

Non Stanford has been named in Britain’s team for the European Triathlon Championships in Glasgow.

The 29-year-old from Swansea will be one of the main contenders for the title at the multi sport Games which start on August 2.

Stanford is part of a nine strong team that also includes defending champ Jessica Learmonth.

The triathlon events take place 9-11 August in Strathclyde Park.

Stanford bounced back to form after her Commonwealth Games disappointment when she finished third at the ITU World series event in Yokohama in May.

The Leeds-based triathlete – an agonising fourth at the Rio Olympics in 2016 – then helped Britain to second in the Mixed Relay series in Nottingham in June.

Double Olympic champ Alistair Brownlee is also included in the team but will assess his fitness before deciding if he will line-up after an injury hit 2018.

As well as individual European titles on the line there is also a Mixed Relay title for teams of two men and two women.

The venue successfully hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and Learmonth was part of the huge crowd that enjoyed seeing home nations success there.

“I watched the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the course and the home support were incredible in Strathclyde Park,” she said.

“To have the opportunity to defend my European title there is something I’m really looking forward to, as well as potentially racing in the Mixed Relay.”
