Trefelin Win Cup Cracker And Face Llanelli In Final

Trefelin BGC celebrate victory in their Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup semi-final against Pontypridd Town.

Trefelin Win Cup Cracker And Face Llanelli In Final

Trefelin BGC won a cup cracker at Aberaman Park, Aberdare and earned a clash with Welsh League First Division leaders Llanelli Town in the final.

Manager Richard Ryan’s Trefelin fought out a 3-3 draw against Pontypridd Town in their Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup semi-final after extra time.

Port Talbot-based Trefelin then won the penalty shootout 4-2 and earned their place in the final against Llanelli, who defeated Cwmbran Celtic 3-0 in the other semi-final.

The final between Llanelli and Trefelin will be played on Friday, May 18 at a neutral venue to be decided.

Trefelin fought back from behind twice before clinching victory.

Shaun Best finished coolly to put Trefelin in front following good work by Edwards, while Pontypridd hit back to lead 2-1.

Prolific scorer Danny Hooper netted his 19th of the season when he fired into a top corner after a Ponty corner was only half cleared.

Matthew Hibbs added Ponty’s second after a counter-attack before Trefelin made it 2-2. A corner taken by Mike Waters was fired home by captain Ceri Williams.

The tie went into extra time and Pontypridd regained the lead when Bobby Briers scored at the far post after a long throw was flicked on.

That goal by Briers looked set to take Ponty into the final, but Edwards equalised in the dying seconds of extra time and the semi-final had to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Llanelli Town manager Andy Hill.

Trefelin, still unbeaten this season in Welsh League Division Three, held their nerve to win 4-2 on spot-kicks and go forward to the final.

This was Trefelin’s fourth win against Second Division opposition in the league cup, having won against leaders STM Sports in the quarter-finals.

Llanelli are, like Trefelin, still on course for a league and cup double.

While the team from Port Talbot are fighting it out with Swansea University for the Division Three title, Llanelli stand top of Division One and are through to the cup final.

Holders Llanelli won 3-0 against Cwmbran in their semi-final at the Marston’s Stadium, Afan Lido.

Manager Andy Hill and his Reds team won the Second Division title and cup a year ago and are going for another double.

Former Merthyr Town forward Josh Bull was the big danger to Llanelli and he went close when he threatened to break clear down the middle only to be stopped by a Chris Thomas saving tackle.

Celtic hopes were rocked when Bull went off injured after 38 minutes with Lloyd Kinsella taking over.

The first half lacked quality, while there was an improvement in the second.

Lee Trundle had a shot cleared off the line before James Loveridge, with a surging run, forced Luke Jones to concede a corner to Llanelli.

Lee Bevan met Trundle’s deliver and powered his header past Fleming on 56 minutes to put the Reds ahead.

Kurtis March played a pass into the feet of Trundle after 10 minutes and the former Swansea City striker fired into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The scoring was completed six minutes from time when Trundle added, picking up a long clearance before firing into the net.
