Traylor’s Spot-Kick Earns AwayDay Joy For Martyrs

Merthyr Town led three times against Frome Town away and earned all three points when Ian Traylor fired the winner.

Tom Meechan, Ryan Prosser and Traylor were the Martyrs scorers in a 3-2 win at Frome’s Badgers Hill ground in Somerset.

Manager Gavin Williams again called on Merthyr youth players to complete his squad with a number of players unavailable.

Frome were intent on completing an EvoStik Southern League double against Merthyr, having won 3-1 at the MetCoaches Stadium in Wales last August.

The home team were also going for a third successive win, but were beaten by a Martyrs team who maintained their challenge for a play-offs place.

More than 300 spectators watched Meechan put Merthyr ahead after 16 minutes, firing home from 22 yards with a first time volley from outside the area that curled away from the goalkeeper and flew into the top far corner.

Merthyr went close to doubling their lead in the 24th minute when centre-half Kyle Patten rose above everyone to head a right wing cross just over the Frome bar from 10 yards.

At this stage it looked as if the visitors might well go on to win the match by a few goals as they started to dominate possession in the Frome half.

However, Frome equalised slightly against the run of play in the 31st minutes as Kris Miller attacked down the right. His crossfield ball found Rogers in space just outside the box.

The Frome target man controlled and swivelled all in one movement  and fired home a low right foot shot that flew past goalkeeper Lewis Webb into the far corner.

Centre-forward Prosser restored Merthyr’s lead after 51 minutes, bursting through unopposed on the right to fire into the far corner.

Frome hit back and equalised within a minute when Miller overlapped on the right and as his cross was deflected high into the air. Rogers watched it come down and played the ball to Mannings, who controlled the ball before playing the ball to Bath who made no mistake from close in at the far post.

At 2-2 the game was finely balanced and either side could frankly have won it, though injury forced Kris Miller off in the 62nd minute.

The winner came when Rex Mannings fouled Traylor as he drove into the penalty area from the right, and the winger picked himself up to score easily from the spot and make it 3-2 to Merthyr after 86 minutes.
