Top seeds Joel Makin and Tesni Evans both cruised through their opening matches at the Welsh Closed Squash Championships.

The defending champions won in straight games on the opening evening at the three-day event, being held at at the Sport Wales National Centre, Sophia Gardens.

Makin, ranked at number 55 in the World, defeated Chris Adrian 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 and lined up a quarter-final against Sam Fenwick late on Saturday afternoon.

Cardiff-born Evans won 11-9, 11-3, 12-10 against Sarah Clode and will now play Ciara Richards in the last eight of the ladies A event.

More than 100 elite players have entered the Welsh Closed and their are eight categories – men’s A, B, C, D, E and F events plus ladies A and B.

The championships started on Friday and the finals are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

In the men’s A section Makin is joined in the quarter-finals by second seed Peter Creed, who plays out of Rhiwbina Squash Club.

Creed won 11-2, 11-1, 11-4 against Chris Lovett and now plays Dan Bergen.

The other quarter-finals feature Elliott Morris-Devred v David Haley and Emyr Evans v Liam Eason.

World number 20 Tesni Evans is joined in the ladies A last eight by second seed Deon Saffery, who is from Barry.

Saffery won 11-3, 11-6, 11-1 against Bronte Wright and now plays Abby Hicks.
