Swansea City’s youngsters failed to make it through to the semi-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy after losing on penalties to Coventry City.
The Swans U21s team – the only age group side still left in the competition – bowed out 4-2 on spot kicks after their Liberty Stadium tie ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Botti Biabi and Ryan Blair missed their penalties as Coventry held their nerve to go through to the last four.
Swansea had taken the lead in the 69th minute through a penalty for striker Ollie McBurnie.
But coach Cameron Toshack’s side were unable to cling on to their lead as Coventry’s Jordan Willis headed an equaliser five minutes from time.
Toshack made four changes to the side that beat Wolves Academy in the third round of the tournament earlier this month.
One of those was the inclusion in midfield of Jay Fulton, who has made 10 Premier League appearances this season. The Scot made his third appearance in the Checkatrade Trophy this campaign.
Fellow Scot Blair also returned to the team to start in midfield, while Alex Bray and Owain Jones started on the wings for the young Swans.
Experienced German goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel was the Swans’ only overage player, making his fourth start in the competition. McBurnie, who netted twice in the last round, kept his place up front.
