One of the rising stars of Welsh tennis, James Story, helped Great Britain boys to victory in the Tennis Europe 16U Winter Cup.

James, who trains at Cardiff Metropolitan University, was part of the three-player GB 16U team who won the title in France.

GB beat the hosts in the semi-final which included James in the deciding doubles, winning the tie 2-1 through an 11-9 match tie-break. In the final, the team overcame Belgium, who had beaten them in the initial group stage.

The team also included Harry Wendelken and Jacob Fearnley, and was captained by Wimbledon doubles quarter-finalist Chris Wilkinson.

Meanwhile, Morgan Cross (who trains at Wrexham Tennis Centre), played at number 1 for GB girls as they gained fifth place in their 16U Winter Cup finals, having won the qualifying group.

“Having players from Wales being selected for Great Britain is a huge achievement,” said Tennis Wales chief executive, Peter Drew. “To be part of a GB team that wins the Winter Cup is absolutely fantastic.

“James and Morgan have done Wales and GB proud, through their talent and dedication, and this success is also recognition of the coaching and support they receive in Wales.”

Both James and Morgan will be contending for a place in the Wales squad for the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas this year.
