Stanford Throws Down Marker To Olympic Rivals in Cape Town

Non Stanford launched her Olympic year in stunning fashion with victory in the Discovery World Triathlon in Cape Town.

The Swansea star became the third British woman in three years to win the South Africa event.

Stanford had already qualified for Rio where she will be joined by Vicky Holland, who was sixth on Sunday, and fellow Welsh triathlete Helen Jenkins.

Stanford, 27, said: “I came here to see where I was, and I think everything is on track.

“I’m definitely not in my ideal race shape, so it means there is more to come, which is exciting.”

Stanford took control on the final running leg of the Olympic distance event after Bermuda’s Flora Duffy has taken the lead in the swim which she maintained on the bike section.
