Tesni Evans is into the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Chicago after a superb victory over Sarah-Jane Perry.
The 26-year-old raced into early leads in the first two games but had to fend off fight-backs from her English rival to win them 11-6, 11-8.
Evans, seeded 10, lost the third game against the No 6 seed 8-11 but responded to take the fourth 11-7 to see out the match after 45 minutes.
“That was the weirdest game of squash I have ever played,” said Evans after her victory in the $500,000 tournament at Union Station. “No idea what was going on.
“SJ started slowly then she came back and I’ve lost to her so many times from 2-0 up. Over the moon to finish it off.”
Evans had gone into the match trailing Perry 7-1 in the head-to-heads although their last two meetings had seen a win apiece.
But this time the world No 11 from Cardiff came out on top against her higher ranked rival for one of the most important wins of her career.
It earned her a spot in the last eight for the second worlds in succession.
