Disabled sailors will get new opportunities around Cardiff and the Vale thanks to Celtic Capability Sailing being awarded status as an RYA Sailability Centre.
Based in Barry Community Water Activity Sailing Centre in the Vale of Glamorgan, Capability Sailing exists to provide opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to experience the joy of sailing, with the focus on capability, not disability.
Sailability is the RYA’s national programme enabling people with disabilities to try sailing and take part on a regular basis. Becoming a Sailability Centre means reaching high standards of accessibility and safety for sailors of all abilities.
Not-for-profit organisation Capability Sailing has a Hawk 20 yacht, called Artemis, which is a safe and stable environment for sailing, and perfect for those wishing to take their first step into the sport.
Wendy Hopkins, founding director of Capability Sailing stated that “We are absolutely thrilled to be part of RYA Sailability, and this is a milestone that will help us create opportunities to enhance may people’s lives”.
David Jenkins, Chairman and co-director, also commented that “the whole team is equally delighted to be accepted as an accredited centre, and we look forward to welcoming a diverse group of people to try their hand at sailing with us”.
Pete Muskett, South Wales development officer for RYA Cymru Wales, added, “It is always great to be able to extend the opportunities for people of all abilities to go sailing.
“By becoming a Sailability Centre, Capability Sailing have proved high standards in safety and sailing expertise, with programmes running under RYA qualified coaches.
“Their yacht Artemis is an excellent environment for people to try sailing.”
