Angel Rangel has promised fans they will see the real Swansea City next season after admitting the club had lost its identity in the relegation fight.
The Swans look set for a busy summer in the transfer marker as chairman Huw Jenkins revamps a squad which could be back under the charge of Brendan Rodgers come August.
But whatever players are brought in, Spanish stalwart Rangel is predicting a return to the club’s famed passing game next season.
The right-back, 33, said: “You could tell this season that we lost a bit of our identity.
“The important thing now is to get back to that. When you’re in a difficult situation you cannot always play good football.
“We may not have been very convincing in the way we played, but we won.
“Next season we need to get back to what has served us so well for many years — the Swansea way.
“I think the chairman wants that as well, he’s made it clear so it’s going to be a difficult but exciting summer ahead.
“It will also be a special one because we know how difficult things have been.”
The Swans finally secured their safety with Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool Swansea’s 3-1 – a win which also ensured they beat their previous lowest Premier League total of 42.
Rangel has been key in the turn-around in form since the New Year having regained his place ahead of Kyle Naughton when Alan Curtis then Francesco Guidolin took charge.
“Sunday was a celebration because finally we have mathematically survived in the Premier League,” added the long-serving defender.
“It’s been a tough couple of weeks, but to produce a good performance was all we wanted to do to repay the fans.
“Staying in the Premier League was the most important thing and we’ve done that.
“Maybe we’ve taken the Premier League for granted at some points.
“It was difficult in the first half of the season because I didn’t have a game at all. I did not play.
“In January when Curt and then Francesco got the job I got back in the team and I did my best. I was happy to help the team and get us safe again.
“Getting relegated has never been in my plans since I’ve been at Swansea. We’re staying up and now we can move forward again.”
