Paul Clement Tells Swans’ England Pair They Need To Do It Every Week

Paul Clement has told Tammy Abraham and Alfie Mawson they need to find consistency for Swansea City if they are progress to full international honours.

Abraham has been named in the England Under-21 squad just a week after denying he was considering switching allegiances to Nigeria.

The London-born striker, on loan from Chelsea, has been called up by manager Aidy Boothroyd ahead of the Euro 2019 qualifiers against Scotland and Andorra next month.

Mawson was part of England’s U21 squad this summer, but has now moved out of that age group and must now focus his international ambitions on trying to break into Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.

But Clement – who sends his team to West Ham on Saturday seeking only their second win of the Premier League season – says both his three Lions youngsters must become more reliable at club level.

“My opinion is that those two young players must show they can be consistent at this level,” said Clement.

“To be good in one game and then not in another. You can’t do that. You need to find the consistency and international selection is then a spin-off from that.”

Abraham, 19, scored his second Premier League goal of the season in the 2-1 home defeat to Watford last week, but has not yet found the regular impact he made for Bristol City in the Championship last season.

Mawson has also had some impressive displays, mixed in with some he would rather forget such as his first-half display against the Hornets last week.

Clement has revealed that the inconsistencies across the squad led to tempers rising at a training session on Tuesday, an outcome he was not altogether unhappy with.

“We are not demoralised, we are disappointed. The mood on Tuesday was one of frustration that came out in the training sessions. That’s fine, people need to let off steam.

“There was a focus and we are looking forward. We were all frustrated with what happened in the first-half against Watford, but the second half showed we are not far away from getting good results.”

West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham last week – which saw the Hammers stay in the relegation zone despite a fightback after falling 3-0 behind – stopped a mini-revival which had seen them pick up four points from two games.

After opening up with three-straight defeats, West Ham beat Huddersfield at home before drawing at West Brom.

“West Ham have had their own difficulties and their stadium was not available at the start of the season. Their first three games were away from home which has not helped them.

“They had a good game against Tottenham and got back in it. But we want to go into the game with a positive line-up that can get the right result.”

Swansea’s away form has actually been good with victory at Palace sandwiched by draws at Southampton and Tottenham.

Although Swansea have lost their opening three home league games for the first time, they have yet to concede a goal on the road.

“The away form has been a help,’ Clement said. “We are defending better than we are attacking. We are working on that and I fully believe we will keep improving in that area.

“Defending is a good platform to build your attacking game on and understanding the patterns.

“We have been able to find more space away from home and West Ham will want a win, which might give us room.

“We know we need to be better attacking-wise, but we are just six games into the league season.”
