Olsson And Carroll On Verge Of Joining Swans Relegation Scrap

Paul Clement is set to sign Martin Olsson and Tom Carroll as he looks to bolster a Swansea City side that slumped back to the bottom of the Premier League after a 4-0 defeat by Arsenal.

The ex-Bayern Munich No 2 lost his first league game in charge as the Swans defensive shortcomings were again exposed at the Liberty Stadium.

But Clement says only the paperwork needs to be sorted on the arrival of left-back Olsson from Norwich and Tottenham midfielder Carroll who had a loan spell two seasons ago.

The Swans manager said: “The Carroll signing is very close. Pending a medical and paperwork, it will go through. Same with Olsson.”

Olsson’s arrival is timely with Neil Taylor ruled out for at least three weeks with a fractured cheekbone after a training ground collision with Wayne Routledge.

The duo are both being signed in deals around £4million and following the signing of winger Luciano Narsingh from PSV.

The Swans restricted Arsenal to just one goal before the break courtesy of Olivier Giroud’s powerful strike.

But it got worse after the interval.

Alex Iwobi’s effort took a big deflection off Jack Cork while Kyle Naughton scored a second own goal with Alexis Sanchez completed the rout.

The defeat sent the Swans back to the bottom but they are still just one point adrift a safety.

Clement said: “It is very disappointing. The first half we were in the game and looked solid defensively, even though we did not do enough offensively.

“We got caught on the counter for the first goal.

“In the second half, we started poorly and then it was an uphill struggle after the first own goal. Arsenal showed how much quality they have offensively.”
