Oli McBurnie ended his barren spell with two goals to see off Reading – not that his manager felt his striker was sleepless in Swansea.
McBurnie’s double enabled the Swans to overcome Reading, 2-0, at the Liberty Stadium and move back to within two points off the play-offs.
The goals were McBurnie’s first for eight matches, but Graham Potter insisted: “He’s an unselfish guy who isn’t bothered as long as the team wins and I think he’s contributed with assists.
“He’s had a good week during a period where he’s probably learned a bit. He’ll be a better player and person for it.”
It made for an unhappy return to the Liberty Stadium for Paul Clement, who was back in Wales for the first time last December when he was handed the sack.
Clement’s current team are still in the relegation zone but they would have levelled things up when they were 1-0 down if Yakou Meite had done better with two headers.
As it was, McBurnie – who had put Swansea ahead with a penalty – finished things off when he was set up by Daniel James, whose pace gave the Royals an uncomfortable afternoon.
Potter added: “It’s great and I’m really pleased for the players. You have to survive some moments in any game but I thought we attacked well and tried to limit them.
“The second-half it became a bit more open and we probably didn’t play as well, but they changed their system and we had to come to terms with that.
“Overall I’m delighted to come away with six points and back-to-back wins and another clean sheet.
It’s great for the supporters to have back-to-back wins.
“We’re finding out more about the lads but as time goes on you would expect things will become clearer. But at the same time the Championship is a bit like this so you have to open minded.
“I think the young players have been really consistent. Dan James has always brought himself into the game, Joe Rodon always does well, Matt Grimes was good in midfield alongside Jay who had an impact in the game.
“We haven’t got a group of 28 or 29-year-old Championship players, we have a young group and the important thing is that the environment can help them be themselves.
“The job then is how to use them game by game in different situations, we didn’t know how Dan would cope with three games in a week but he’s getting closer and closer.
Clement felt an offside call against Sam Baldock to rule out an opener for Reading, was a mistake.
“The goal from a set play should have stood,” said Clement.
“I can’t say we deserved to lead but, for me, we did score a legitimate goal.
“I thought we deserved to get back into the game but we couldn’t get over the line. The more and more you push, you leave yourselves open, Swansea are good on the counter and they finished us off.”
The Swans have now won back-to-back games for the first time since the opening of the season and Potter feels the closeness of the Championship race means they can continue to climb the table.
“The league table is one for the insane people to look at at this point because it keeps changing, we just have to keep in improving.
“It’s nice for the supporters that we’re starting to feel comfortable and confident at home, we’ve had to work at that.
“We played well against Ipswich but it was the third game in a week and we learned from it, but we had moments today and sometimes football can kick you.”
