Manager Michael Flynn apologised to Newport County fans suffered a disastrous 6-0 home defeat against promotion rivals Yeovil Town at Rodney Parade.
County went into the match boasting a 100 per cent League Two home record and supporters responded to Flynn’s plea for them to turn out in force with almost 4,200 at the match.
But Yeovil hit their hosts for six and Newport had Robbie Willmott sent off for a studs up challenge.
“The performance was not good enough,” said Flynn. “I apologise to supporters who turned up in their thousands.
“Yeovil punished us. They were efficient and ripped us apart at times. You can’t concede or give up those chances, give away the goals we did and expect anything from the game.
“It’s a day to forget, but we have to get them ready for Tranmere next week.”
Flynn’s County are third in the League Two table and now prepare for their trip to Tranmere, who are three points behind the Exiles, next Saturday.
County midfield player Josh Sheehan tweeted: “Apologies to the fans for our performance simply not good enough, we’ll put it right next week!”
Yeovil are now unbeaten in six matches. They led 3-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Yoann Arquin, former Newport player Jordan Green and Diallang Jaiyesimi, while Green, Olufela Olomola and Carl Dickinson completed their tally.
Willmott’s dismissal with 10 minutes left summed up their whole afternoon. By then Yeovil led 6-0.
Goalkeeper Joe Day had little chance with the first five, but was left horrified when he failed to gather a free-kick and the ball went through his legs and into goal.
Flynn made one change from the side that secured victory at Oldham, recalling Mark Harris in place of Jamille Matt, and set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation.
Newport, though, had a day when little went right for his team and he will expect a performance full of character and spirit at Tranmere next Saturday.
