Former Bangor City manager Nev Powell has returned to management in the Welsh Premier League after his appointment at Aberystwyth Town was confirmed today.

Powell fits the bill at Aberystwyth perfectly after revalidating his UEFA A Licence in May and will work alongside assistant Wayne Jones, who has been controlling first-team affairs on an interim basis.

Aberystwyth are believed to have consulted numerous candidates including former manager Ian Hughes before settling on Powell, as the club make their second managerial appointment of the summer after Tony Pennock departed the club just a month into the role after accepting a coaching role at Hull City.

Powell’s experience will be invaluable to Aberystwyth as they look to re-establish themselves in the league after a disastrous campaign almost saw the club relegated for the first time in their history.

Powell also possesses an enviable track record as manager having guided Bangor City to the Welsh Premier League title in 2011 and three successive Welsh Cups from 2008-2010.

Aberystwyth chairman Donald Kane is delighted to have Powell on board: “Nev’s stature within Welsh football, his experience within the League, and the extensive contacts he has within the game marked him out as an outstanding candidate for the job, and as a club we are delighted to have recruited him as first-team manager.”

Powell, who managed Connah’s Quay for 14 years prior to joining Bangor, has been out of the game for 12 months after unexpectedly being relieved of his duties shortly before the start of last season following a takeover of the Citizens.

Powell will take charge of Aberystwyth’s pre-season opener against Llanelli on Saturday and it is understood he and Wayne Jones have already had lengthy discussions regarding pre-season planning and recruitment.
