Nathaniel MG Cup: Hughes Targeting Another Newtown Semi-Final Spot

Chris Hughes has set his sights set on a semi-final place as Newtown look to carry their good form into the Nathaniel MG Cup.

All four quarter-final matches are being played tonight, including the two all-WPL ties with current holders The New Saints away to Llandudno and Bala Town facing Connah’s Quay.

The Latham Park side reached the last four of the competition last season before being eliminated by eventual runners-up Cardiff Met.

Cardiff Met play their second match in less than 72 hours against Haverfordwest County while the Robins also face Welsh League opposition, in the form of Cambrian & Clydach.

“After getting to the semi-final last year we want to replicate it,” said Hughes. “It keeps the season going, we are on a good run and want to keep that going.”

The Robins kept their top-six hopes firmly intact on the weekend with a well-earned draw against The New Saints.

That draw was the latest in a growing list of impressive results from the Mid-Wales side and Hughes is hoping his team can keep their good form going.

“Momentum is massive in football so it’s important to get through to the next round and we will be going down with a full squad,” he said.

The Rhondda Valley side have climbed to fourth in the Welsh League Division One table this season having won their last four and have already eliminated Barry Town and Aberystwyth en route to the last 16.

“Cambrian will be a very tough game having already knocked two Welsh Premier League sides out – they are going well in their league and are at home so we are well aware of the threat they will pose.”
