Merthyr Town scored twice in the last seven minutes to earn a crucial Southern League victory at St Neots.

The Martyrs were 2-1 down when Jarrad Wright equalised on 83 minutes and then Ian Traylor fired the winner with two minutes left.

Their win keeps Merthyr on course to qualify for the Premier Division play-offs.

Chippenham Town have already won the title and are promoted automatically, while Leamington, Hitchin Town, Slough Town and Merthyr are in the play-off spots.

The Welsh club are, though, only one point ahead of Banbury United, although they do have a superior goal difference.

There are three league fixtures left to play and the Martyrs dare not slip.

An own goal by Taylor Parr after only two minutes game Merthyr the lead at St Neots in Cambridgeshire, while Declan Rogers celebrated his birthday by equalising after a quarter of an hour.

Lee Clarke’s header on 32 minutes put the home team in front and Merthyr needed a big finish.

They hit back through Wright and Traylor to take all three points.

Merthyr’s remaining three fixtures are against St Ives (home), Redditch (away) plus Hayes and Yeading (home), while Banbury face Hitchin (home), Leamington (away) and Kettering (home).

Goals from Luke Carnell and Manny Duku earned Banbury a hard-fought win at Cinderford Town.

Former Cardiff City captain Mike Ford is Banbury’s manager and his team saw out an anxious last few minutes to keep alive hopes of catching Merthyr Town.
