Merthyr Town Aiming To Step Up Southern League Mission

Merthyr Town continue their chase for promotion when they play Hertfordshire club Kings Langley away on Saturday (3pm).

The Martyrs are three points clear of their nearest rivals, Banbury United, in the last play-off spot with five matches to be played.

Manager Gavin Williams and his team also have a far superior goal difference and need a solid end to the regular League season to ensure they qualify for the play-offs.

There is only one automatic promotion place available, with Chippenham Town out in front now, and the next four teams will battle it out for a second spot in National League football.

The Martyrs make another of their long cross-country journeys to the area north of London to take on a Kings Langley side fighting to stay out of the relegation zone.

Sixth-placed Banbury are favourites to win their game away against strugglers Hayes and Yeading and Merthyr need the three points from their fixture at Kings Langley.

A win would also offer the possibility of making up ground on fourth-placed Slough who are at home to mid-table King’s Lynn.

At the time of the reverse fixture in mid-December Kings Langley were in 17th place and are now 20th, having spent most of the season just outside the bottom four, and are just two points ahead of Cirencester Town.

In the game at Penydarren Park the Martyrs ran out comfortable winners by a margin that would have been greater than 5-0 but for a rare penalty miss by Ryan Prosser.

Since that defeat last season’s Division One Central champions have won only three league games and lost 10 out of 18 played with only next-to-bottom Cambridge City having won fewer league games at home than their five, with 12 of 21 ending in defeat.

Kings Langley’s last home fixture ended in a 3-1 loss to Stratford Town, but that was followed by a creditable draw at Weymouth last Saturday.

Leading scorer for the Kings, and their only player into double figures, is Lewis Toomey on 12, but apart from a goal in a County Cup game against Spartan South Midlands League side Sun Sports he has not found the net since the end of January.

Ian Traylor is in line to make his 300th appearance for Merthyr Town and Jarrad Wright is due to return after missing the five-goal home win against Cambridge City last Saturday.

Wright is likely to slot into the back four to replace Curtis McDonald, who suffered a groin strain against Cambridge.

Keyon Reffell, who completes his three-game ban, is ruled out of the Merthyr squad.

LoadLok Manufacturing, who make a range of specialist cargo control systems, have agreed to continue their sponsorship of Penydarren Park through 2017-18.

Club business Development Manager, Phil Jones said “We are thrilled that LoadLok have agreed to another season of sponsoring our Stadium. We have thoroughly enjoyed our partnership since we initially made contact and we are looking forward to working together in the future.”

The next Merthyr Town fixture at their LoadLok Community Stadium will be against St. Ives Town on Saturday, April 15.

Former Cardiff City, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United forward Craig Bellamy is the speaker at a Merthyr Town Football Club dinner on Friday, May 12.

Bellamy will chat about his achievements during his playing career that lasted nearly 20 years.

The former Wales International, who was capped 78 times and scored 19 goals will, be joined by a comedian and guests will also enjoy a two-course meal.

Tickets cost just £30 and tables of 12 are also available. To book your tickets, please contact the football club on 01685 359074 between 9am-5pm.
