Mark Richardson’s testimonial match, reward for more than 10 years service to Cardiff Devils, will be played later this year.
Devils coach Andrew Lord has confirmed British defenceman Richardson will be back for 2017-18, having signed a two-year contract.
He is the third Devils signing confirmed for next season, following player-coach Lord and Joey Martin.
Lord is also in advanced talks with a number of his group from last season plus possible new recruits.
Richardson has committed to the Elite League champions. His intensity, gritty defence, composure, vision and work ethic pick him out among the best D-man in Britain.
His testimonial will go ahead now after ‘Richy’ voluntarily postponed it last season to let the ‘Matchka’ – a charity game in support of Scott Matzka and his battle with Motor Neuron Disease – take place on that date instead.
It was agreed Richardson’s testimonial would be played next season.
“Richy is officially back and we will be announcing more information on his testimonial over the next couple of weeks.”
Richardson had another outstanding season in 2016-17, scoring 11 goals and adding 27 assists for 38 points in 66 games. He was one of only seven players to ice in every game for the Devils and his tally of five powerplay goals was a career high.
He was voted Devils Best Defenceman by teammates and fans, an award he shared with teammate and defensive partner Andrew Hotham.
Richardson played a key role for Great Britain at the World Championships in Belfast, helping coach Peter Russell’s team win the gold medal and earn promotion.
He had three assists in five games for Team GB and was an integral part of the squad for a 12th straight year.
His testimonial game will take place in October or November this year. Devils will confirm the exact date and how to buy tickets in the next couple of weeks.
