Joel Makin reached his first PSA World Tour Gold quarter-final after sending No 7 seed Omar Mosaad crashing out of the China Open.

The Haverfordwest-born player won 3-1 in 65 minutes in his second round match against the former world No 3 from Egypt.

Makin took the first game 11-9 before his higher ranked opponent his back 11-8 in the second.

But Makin then reeled off successive games 11-5, 11-6 to reach the last eight.

Cardiff-born Tesni Evans bowed out in her second round match against defending champion Nour El Sherbini.

The Egyptian won 14-12, 11-5, 11-5 in just under 30 minutes on the spectacular court overlooking the Bund in Shanghai.

But El Sherbini paid tribute to Wales’ Commonwealth Games gold medallist and reigning British champion ranked No 12 in the world.

Evans fought back from game ball down five times in the opening game before the world’s best player took the game.

“I’m definitely pleased,” said El Sherbini. “Tesni has been doing great over the last season and she has been playing very tough matches with all of the top five players.

“It’s the first match of the season and it’s never going to be an easy match but I’m really glad I won in the end.

“It’s amazing to be playing in front of this view, I think it’s one of the best venues.
