King’s Lynn Make 500-Miles Round Trip to Play Merthyr Town

King’s Lynn make the 500-mile round trip from Norfolk to South Wales for Southern League clash with Merthyr Town (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

The Linnets will be on their team coach for almost 10 hours in total and have the longest journey of any team visiting Merthyr this season.

This fixture at Penydarren Park was originally scheduled for a Saturday in November, but had to be rearranged due to Lynn’s involvement in the FA Trophy.

King’s Lynn’s visit to Merthyr last season came on the opening day of the season when the Martyrs won 2-0, and they went on to finish in ninth.

This season the fixtures were reversed, with Merthyr’s visit to The Walks Stadium coming in early August when a stoppage time penalty from Ryan Prosser secured a point in a 1-1 draw.

Following that start to the season the Linnets have gone on to spend most of it in the lower half of the league table and are currently 16th and are one of a group of clubs on 35 points with seemingly no danger of being involved in either a relegation fight or a play-off challenge.

Their home record is reasonable, but they have won only three of their 13 away games, while only seven teams have scored fewer than their total of 37 league goals.

Their record of goals conceded was rather spoiled by a 6-1 home defeat by Weymouth on Saturday, which was their third defeat in a row and the heaviest seen at The Walks since 2002.

King’s Lynn’s leading scorer is midfielder Michael Clunan with 10 goals in all competitions with former Mansfield Town player Lee Stevenson on eight.

Experienced striker Leon Mettam has scored seven goals, but was left out of the team on Saturday and has been made available to go out on loan following what the club describe as ‘an incident’.

He is, though, expected to be in the squad at Merthyr Town.

Team news for the Martyrs is that Jarrad Wright, a powerful defender or midfield player, is added to the squad who won 3-1 at Kettering Town on Saturday.

The Martyrs thank Nite Lite Security for being both match and ball sponsors.
