Dean Keates fears Wrexham’s slim play-off chances are now all but over after their 2-0 National League home defeat by Aldershot.

Keates had hoped of celebrating his new three-and-a-half-year deal as Dragons boss with a win that would have kept them in the hunt.

But in front of a 5,000 crowd at the Racecourse Ground, he saw his side lose their six game unbeaten record.

Wrexham are now 10th in the table 10 points from the play-off spots but having played a couple of games more than fellow challengers.

The 38-year-old said of the promotion hopes: “If we had won, it could have been a possibility.

“But realistically we have played a lot more games than everyone else and the teams in the top half are consistent.

“It is not good enough, our decent run has come to an end and we need a reaction now.”

Keates saw his side create chances in the first-half but fail to take them against Town.

And they were made to pay as Scott Rendell scored with 20 minutes left before Jim Kellermann sealed the win.

Keates added: “It is a feeling of disappointment after that one, obviously we are the home side and the expectation is to win football matches at home.

“In the first half we were ok but we were not bang at it. In the second half you give Aldershot credit, I thought they were outstanding and dictated the tempo of the game.

“We are frustrated, we needed to take our chances in the first half.”
