Jones Back On Mat And Looking Forward To A Scrap In Germany

Jade Jones is relishing having a few scraps when she makes her Taekwondo comeback in Germany on Sunday.

Flint’s Olympic champion has not fought for four months due to a knee injury but knows she has to get back on the mat to prove her fitness for Rio.

Jones is all but assured the -57kg spot in Britain’s Brazil-bound team but wants to show her form to the selectors at the German Open.

The 23-year-old said: “I just need to get back on the mat and have a few scraps.

“It wasn’t worth risking things with the Olympics coming up. For the sake of missing a couple of competitions it was better to get strong and get back to normal.

“I want as many fights as I can. But there are a lot of high quality players going to Hamburg so it will be a good test for my first tournament back.

“I think I have done enough to prove my place for Rio but I have got to keep fit and keep showing the selectors I am in form.”

Jones hasn’t fought since bagging bronze at the World Grand Prix final series in Mexico City last December.

The 2012 champ missed the Dutch Open and President’s Cup tournaments but will Sunday bid to regain a title she last won in 2013.
