Joel Makin’s Egyptian Adventure Comes To An End In Semi-Finals

Joel Makin saw his epic run at the PSA World Tour Finals ended after a tough semi-final battle in Cairo.

The 25-year-old British No 1 was beaten 2-0 by Egpyt’s defending champ Karim Abdel Gawad.

Makin, seeded seven for the event, lost 11-9, 11-8 after a 39 minute battle at the Mall of Arabia against the fourth seed.

The Haverfordwest-born player was biding to reach his 12th PSA Tour final against an opponent who had beaten him on their previous three meetings.

But it was not to be as Gawad progressed to the final tomorrow.

But Makin – only the second Welshman to compete in the event – can look back on a stunning few days that brought victories over reigning world champ Tarek Momen and New Zealand’s Paul Coll, both seeded higher than him in the rankings.

Makin has also moved up to a career high nine in the world this week after his run to last month’s Manchester Oen quarter-finals.
