High Five For Leaders Caernarfon And Airbus

Caernarfon Town and Airbus Brought UK, the top two teams in Huws Gray Alliance football, both hit five goals on a day when five fixtures were postponed.

The Cofis moved closer to winning the Alliance title with a 5-3 win against Caersws, who gave their hosts a scare at the Oval by hitting back strongly from 4-0 down.

Airbus had Leo Riley sent off, but still powered to a 5-0 victory against Holyhead Hotspur.

The five games called off fell victim to waterlogged pitches and the Alliance have lost 18 matches to the weather during March. The total for  2017-18 is 50.

Caernarfon were three goals ahead inside half an hour thanks to goals from Gareth Edwards (11 and 28 mins) plus Jay Crowther (16).

Darren Thomas added a fourth (43) and that was the half-time score.

Aaron Hughes (47) and Steve Blenkinsop (52) replied for Caersws before Jamie Breese scored Caernarfon’s fifth with 55 minutes gone.

Caersws had the final word in terms of goals when Craig Harris netted (77) and Caernarfon eased to victory.

The leaders are in a strong position at the top. Neither Airbus in second or third-placed Rhyl can catch them, while Guilsfield, in fourth, can only equal Caernarfon’s current points total.

That would mean Guilsfield winning their last three fixtures and the Cofis losing four in a row.

If goal difference was needed to decide the issue Caernarfon are currently on plus 56 against Guilsfield’s plus 13.

Denbigh, Holywell and Porthmadog could mathematically still catch the leaders, but it would take a major run of success.

Eardley’s Cofis have four away matches left in their quest to be crowned champions and earn promotion to the Welsh Premier League.

They go to Llandudno Junction on Monday and also have fixtures at play Ruthin Town, Caersws and Gresford Athletic.

Holyhead Hotspur’s home game against Airbus was the only other game to beat the weather.

Airbus were ahead after 13 minutes through Leo Riley and doubled their lead with Ryan Edwards on target five minutes before the break.

Nathan Quirk converted a penalty eight minutes into the second half to increase the Airbus lead, but they found themselves down to 10 men after the dismissal of goalscorer Riley.

Substitute James Hopper fired two goals in the last 10 minutes to give the Airmen a comfortable win.

Airbus (away @HolyheadHotspur): Coughlin, Taylor, Strong, Tomassen, Quirk, Platt, R Edwards, Williams, Sanogo, Riley, Buckley. Subs: Robinson, Roberts, Davies, Fosu-Mensah, Hooper.

Flint Town United’s home game against Porthmadog at Cae-Y-Castell was called off, but the teams are hoping they can play the reverse fixture on Bank Holiday Monday at Y Traeth.

Port are seven in the table, three places and 11 points ahead of Flint. Only Caernarfon and Airbus have scored more goals than Porthmadog, who have netted 62 at an average of 2.8 per game.

Defensively, Port have conceded 40 goals (1.8 average).

There are three Alliance fixtures scheduled on Bank Holiday Monday(April 2) and they are Caersws v Ruthin, Llandudno Junction v Caernarfon and Porthmadog v Flint Town.
