Gus Poyet's Son Diego Makes His Debut For Bluebirds

Under 23 Development match:

Cardiff City 1, Sheffield Wednesday 2

Diego Poyet, the son of former Uruguay, Chelsea and Spurs player Gus, has joined Cardiff City.

The 22-year-old midfield player made his Bluebirds debut in their Premier Development League match against Sheffield Wednesday at Leckwith Stadium.

Former West Ham and Charlton Athletic first team player Poyet has joined Cardiff on a short-term basis initially, but has the chance to impress manager Neil Warnock and his coaching team.

Poyet junior had signed for an Argentinian club for this season, but the Spanish-born player has returned to the UK, where he grew up, and is intent on making the grade with Cardiff.

He undoubtedly has talent, but must now find the consistency and mentality to make the most of that ability.

Poyet completed 90 minute for the under-23 team, who were unfortunate to lose a close-fought match.

Fraser Preston scored Wednesday’s winner in the closing minutes, firing home from close range.

After a goalless first half during which there were few chances, Wednesday went ahead when Connor O’Grady headed home from a corner after 58 minutes.

Declan John went off with a back problem soon after with Keiron Proctor taking over.

Ibrahim Meite should have scored when he had a clear chance from less than 10 yards, but his blast was blocked en route to goal.

The former Harrow Borough striker made amends when he equalised after good work by Mark Harris, who had a highly effective second half.

Centre-half Tyrone Duffus headed just wide during Cardiff’s best spell, but the home team were unable to break through and the visitors snatched victory when Preston forced the ball home from close in.

First team squad member Stuart O’Keefe was captain of City’s under-23 team, while Jarred Harvey and Andy Legg are the team coaches.

Cardiff’s player development manager Craig Bellamy sat alongside another former Bluebird, Scott Young , watching from the main stand.
