Francesco Guidolin is set to be handed a new contract as Swansea City boss after a dramatic change of heart at the Liberty Stadium.

The Italian’s new deal could be ratified by the board at their meeting on Wednesday ending the prospect of Brendan Rodgers making a return this summer.

Guidolin seemed certain to be on his way when his short-term deal ended in June despite saying on several occasions that he happy in South Wales and keen to stay.

Now the ex-Udinese chief seems set to get a new deal with chairman Huw Jenkins and the board having been impressed by the recent upturn in form.

The Swans have won six of their last 10 games and could finish in the top half of the table with victory in Sunday’s final game at home to Manchester City.

Rodgers has been the overwhelming favourite to return following his sacking by Liverpool last October but opted not to make a comeback when Garry Monk was sacked in December.

But the Northern Irishman is reportedly also been in talks with Celtic which might have persuaded the Swans to look again at Guidolin.

Jenkins this week admitted he had been impressed by Guidolin since his appointment in January.

The chairman said: “Francesco has brought exactly what he thought he would bring to us.

“He has brought in a bit of common sense and a bit of simplicity, as well as experience. I don’t think those simple things are highlighted enough in the modern world of football.

“Sometimes other things are given too much prominence and some over-analysing goes on.”
