Guidolin Leaves Door Open To Watford

Francesco Guidolin has refused to deny Watford could offer him a Premier League back-up plan if his time at Swansea City comes to an end.

The Italian is out of contract at the end of the season and has yet to be offered any new deal, with Brendan Rodgers odds-on favourite to replace him.

But Guidolin – who has already spoken of a desire to remain in UK football even if his Swansea tenure comes to an end – could be given an alternative by taking charge at Vicarage Road.

Current Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores guided the club to the FA Cup semi-finals this season as well as a mid-table position, comfortably above the relegation zone.

But doubts remain about the Spaniard remaining in charge under the regime of the Pozzo family – owners of the club and a group Guidolin worked under during his time at Udinese.

“I worked with the Pozzo family for five years in Italy at Udinese,” said Guidolin.

“We worked well together because in those years, four times we got into Europe, two Champions League play-offs and two Europa Leagues. There was one semi-final of the Italian Cup and my memories are very good.

“Udinese is a small club in Italy, but we had many young players that went on to big teams like Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez. But I don’t know what will happen at Watford.”

Guidolin has guided Swansea into 15th spot but they face Liverpool at home on Sunday still not mathematically safe with three games left

The Swans are nine points ahead of Sunderland and Norwich – who both have a game in hand – but have been hammered by Newcastle and Leicester in their last two games, conceding seven goals without scoring.

And Guidolin added: “I have reminded the players that we could still get relegated. The position is better than when I came here, but the most important thing is being mathematically safe.”
