Greenfield FC Face Rhos Aelwyd Challenge In FAW Trophy

Airbus Broughton in North Wales and West Wales club Aberystwyth Town host the FAW Trophy semi-finals on Saturday.

Greenfield and Rhos Aelwyd clash at Airbus in Flintshire, while Conwy Borough and Penydarren BGC play their tie at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue Stadium.

Welsh Premier League referees Huw Jones and Nick Pratt take charge of the games.

Welsh National League Division One leaders Rhos Aelwyd play Holywell area club Greenfield, who were promoted to the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance top flight this season and are 10th in the table.

Sam Jones is Greenfield’s leading scorer on 18 goals, while Danny Calvert struck a set piece treble in their 5-2 Trophy win against Llanrug United in the quarter-finals.

Calvert netted from two penalties and completed his hat-trick from a free-kick 25 yards out, while Jones and Connor Hughes were the other marksmen.

South Wales hopefuls Penydarren BGC face goals ace Corrig McGonigle and they must find a way to stop the prolific Conwy Borough marksman.

Former Glantraeth, Pentraeth and Caernarfon Town forward McGonigle, known as ‘Coz’ to his teammates, has fired 32 goals for Lock Stock Welsh Alliance leaders Conwy this season.

That takes his tally to 155 over the last three seasons and he is still adding to that tally.

McGonigle, 21, netted 59 goals for Glantraeth in their 2016-17 Welsh Alliance Division One championship-winning team, while his total for Pentraeth in 2015-16 was 64.

Conwy won 7-1 against South Wales Alliance club Grange Albion in their quarter-final after McGonigle netted three goals inside the first 14 minutes, including two penalties.

Tommy Creamer (2), Matty Hughes and captain Iolo Hughes completed their tally.

Penydarren BGC manager Kerry Mullin will surely have gained an insight into Conwy’s style by contacting Grange Albion and that extra knowledge may be crucial.

The tie is another tough test for Penydarren, who play in the fifth tier of Welsh football and take on a Conwy team who are two levels higher.

Chris Owens and Josh Brogden scored for Penydarren in their 2-0 quarter-final win against Llangefni Town, who lie second in the Welsh Alliance. Llangefni are four points behind Conwy with two games in hand and defeated the leaders 2-1 away last month.

Penydarren suffered their first defeat in league and cups last weekend, crashing 7-0 in their JD Sports Welsh Cup clash with Welsh Premier League Bangor City.

They returned to winning ways on Thursday evening in a 2-0 Alliance win against Ton and Gelli FC. Connor Keating and Ben Jones were the scorers.

Penydarren are still chasing three trophies with the South Wales Alliance title and promotion their priority, while they are still involved in the FAW Trophy and WJ Owen Cup.

Manager Mullin and his team play Merthyr Saints in the Owen Cup semi-finals and the winners will take on Pencoed AFC or Clwb Cymric.

WJ Owen Cup semi-final draw (ties to be played at neutral venues, location and dates to be confirmed): Blaenrhondda or Cwm Welfare v Caerphilly AFC or Grange Albion; Penydarren BGC or Merthyr Saints v Pencoed AFC v Clwb Cymric.
