All smiles back in May but is Sam Ricketts heading to Shrewsbury?

Scorer Mike, Goalie Rob Shine On Wrexham Debuts

Cameroon hotshot Mike Fondop-Talom made a stunning impact for Wrexham AFC in their opening Vanarama National League match in Kent.

The 24-year-old striker signed from Guiseley struck the only goal of the game after 29 minutes, twisting his body to turn a Paul Rutherford cross into Dover’s goal.

Fondop-Talom has joined the Reds on a two-year contract, scored four goals in five pre-season appearances and marked his League debut with an outstanding goal.

Wrexham manager Sam Ricketts describes Fondop-Talom as a ‘real hot prospect’, a big, strong, physical forward with pace and power.

Iwan Roberts, commentating on the BBC Wales from the Crabble Stadium in Dover, said: “He was outstanding, a proper handful.

“Defenders hate playing against forwards like him because he works hard, chases lost causes and has the upper body strength to win battles.

“Fond won the corner which led to the goal and showed great agility and anticipation when the cross was whipped in.

“He had no right to score from the chance he had. He adjusted his body and was almost sitting on the pitch when he went for an overhead kick.

“The ball went over his head and into the net.”

Former Port Vale goalkeeper Rob Lainton was also making his Wrexham debut and marked his first game with an injury time penalty save during first half injury time.

He was given the nod to start ahead of Christian Dibble, who has been given the number one shirt for the season, while Lainton wears 18.

The spot-kick was awarded when holding midfield player Akil Wright fouled Inih Effiong, who took the penalty himself and was denied by Lainton’s swooping dive to turn the ball away for a corner.

Wrexham, wearing all red kit, impressed in their first League match with manager Sam Ricketts in charge.

Luke Summerfield and Luke Young were full of energy and endeavour in central midfield, while Rutherford caused Dover problems with his pace and movement.

Full-backs Kevin Roberts and James Jennings were outstanding in the full-back positions in a solid back five.

Home team Dover are a big, strong team who finished eighth last season, two places ahead of Wrexham.

This is an 11th successive season in non-League football for Wrexham and they have started their  campaign in style.

They had the best defensive record in the division during 2017-18 and Ricketts will be delighted with the clean sheet and victory.

Jamie Allen hit the bar for Dover after 11 minutes, but that was one of few chances allowed by the visitors and they headed back to North Wales with the win they wanted.
