Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton claimed a Welsh double victory in the first round of the Boyle Sports World Grand Prix in Coventry.
Price triumphed 2-0 over Jermaine Wattimena while Clayton celebrated a first victory in the event beating Ian White 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena.
The 35-year-old Price recovered from 2-0 down in legs to take the first set before sealing victory in the next set.
“I’m just couldn’t get off for love nor money, but I’m a changed player now, I stick in there right until the end,” said Price, who saw a 17-match winning streak bring him three PDC titles last month.
“I was 2-0 down but he was playing rubbish as I was. I just knew I had to get off as I had a better scoring game.
“I wasn’t anywhere near where I need to be to win this tournament I scraped through – happy days.
Price will face Kim Huybrechts in the last 16.
Clayton had earlier qualified for the next round in a hard-fought match against White
“It’s a massive relief,” said Pontyberem’s Clayton. “Ian is a great player, always solid. It was a very tough match.
“It’s the first to six really so I am glad I came out of that.
“Nerves kicked in, but it’s always good to come out a winner.”
