Former Swansea City star Jonjo Shelvey has returned to the UK to sign for Championship promotion-chasers Burnley.

The former Newcastle United and England midfielder has agreed a short-term deal running until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old – who spent thrtee years with the Swans from 2013 to 2016 – has joined Burnley after his contract with Turkish Super Lig side Eyupspor came to an end.

A five-time England international, Shelvey also had a stint with Caykur Rizespor in Turkey.

He arrives at Turf Moor after undergoing a trial with the Championship team earlier this month.

“I like the club as a whole – every time I have played against Burnley at Turf Moor it’s been tough,” he said.

“I’m part of this team now and my aim is to do my best to help this club get back into the Premier League, where it belongs.”

Shelvey began his career in Charlton Athletic’s youth system before moving to Liverpool, where he made 65 appearances for the Merseyside club.

He later moved on to Swansea City, spending three seasons there, where he made 96 appearances.

In 2016, he signed for Newcastle United, where he played a key role in helping the team secure promotion from the Championship during his first full campaign.

After seven years on Tyneside, Shelvey joined Nottingham Forest and subsequently made the switch to Turkey in September 2023.

He now joins a Burnley side sitting third in the Championship standings, just two points shy of the automatic promotion spots.
