Former Leeds Defender Paul Cardiff’s Third New Signing

Paul McKay, a player highly rated by Mansfield Town manager Steve Evans, has signed for Cardiff City.

Evans, who sends out his Stags team against Cardiff in the FA Cup this evening, snapped up McKay and his twin brother Jack when he was manager at Leeds United.

They are 21-years-old, 6ft 2ins tall and are the sons of football agent Willie McKay.

The Bluebirds have signed defender Paul, while they are still assessing striker Jack.

Paul is a third signing for City’s development team this month following Ciaron Brown and Ogo Obi.

Brown, 20, is a centre-half or left-back. A number of Championship clubs have been checking on the tall, combative Brown, who spent time at Sheffield Wednesday.

Nigerian-born striker Obi, also 20, attracted interest from Liverpool and Arsenal, while he had a trial at Manchester United when Louis Van Gaal was manager.

He was released by Watford at the end of last season and has been playing for Hemel Hempstead Town.

Former Swindon Town midfield player Jacob Evans, 19, has also been on trial with Cardiff’s development squad. He has made 13 league appearances for Farnborough this season.

Coaches Jarrad Harvey and Andy Legg took their under-23 development team to Watford for their latest match and the Hornets emerged 1-0 winners.

It was a hard fought match decided when Dennon Lewis scored a 12th minute goal. He ran onto an undercut Rhys Abbruzzese pass and rounded goalkeeper Lee Camp before firing home.

The young Bluebirds had chances of their own, but Watford goalkeeper Sam Howes made a string of excellent saves.

Watford Development: Howes, Eleftheriou, Ryan, Suckling, Sesay; Stewart, Charles; Lewis, Pereira, Williams; Cruz Cabrera. Subs: Lacy (GK), Leighton, Adebiyi, Adedeji, Phillips.

Cardiff City Development: Camp, Sharif, Abbruzzese, Waite, Brown, P. McKay, Trialist (7), Trialist (8), Trialist (9), M Harris, Obi. Subs: Bodenham, Byrne, Wootton, Coxe.

Cardiff City are at home against Blackburn Rovers in the Professional Development League Cup next Monday, January 22 (1pm). The match is at Cardiff International Sports Campus.

The young Bluebirds then go to Coventry City for a Development League match at the Ricoh Stadium on Monday, January 29 (2pm) before playing back-to-back home fixtures.

Watford are visitors to Cardiff on Thursday, February 1 (1pm) followed by Queens Park Rangers on Monday, February 5 (2pm).
