Flint Star Jones Ready To Strike More Games Gold

Jade Jones is gunning for gold when she defends her Olympic taekwondo title in Rio.

The Flint fighter came from nowhere to stun her rivals and win in London aged just 19.

But Jones is determined to defend her -57Kg crown in Brazil after being named in GB’s four-strong team.

Jones, 23, said: “Nobody expected me to win in London. I think I was a 14-1 shot so I could just go for it.

“That’s what I did and it was an unbelievable experience.

“It’s crazy to think I was only 19 then.

“I only came into the national academy in 2010 so nobody expected me to even be on the team let alone get a gold medal, so I think it is a lot different.

“I remember getting picked and thinking, ‘oh my God I’m going to the Olympics’ and I just literally went for it and I won.

“This time it’s been a long four years and Rio has been on my mind the whole time.

“It’s been a lot more preparation and ups and downs but I feel really strong again.”

Jones missed four months with a knee injury but returned in April to win the German Open then added the European title in Switzerland.

Now she has sights set on more gold having already got the 2012 gong safely under lock and key.

She added: ”I used to keep the gold medal by the side of my bed, but was worried about it getting stolen so now it’s in a safe place.

“But I want another one now and I know what to expect and what the pressures will be.

“I’m going to Rio for gold and I’ll be leaving everything on the mat so that I can come out of the ring and know I have given my all.

Jones will be joined by Manchester housemate and world No 1 Bianca Walkden (+67Kg) along with male fighters Lutalo Muhammad (-80Kg) and Mahama Cho (+80Kg).
