Football Association of Wales president Steve Williams has been suspended pending an investigation, the governing body has confirmed.

No reason for the action has been given but the FAW have acknowledged that a case was ongoing.

The news comes amid the FAW’s search for a new men’s national team manager to replace the sacked Rob Page.

It was Williams who quickly took it upon himself to give public backing to Page immediately following the Euro 2024 qualification play-off final defeat to Poland.

Williams, who was elected president in 2021 and has one year left to serve on his term, was then involved in the decision to end Page’s tenure last month.

Williams told BBC Sport Wales: “I cannot comment. It’s for the FAW to comment.”

It is understood an independent investigation into Williams has been completed but an independent disciplinary hearing has not yet taken place.

The FAW board, council and staff members were informed of the investigation into Williams, and his impending interim suspension, at the end of last week.

It is believed that, due to Williams’ seniority, he will receive a hearing in front of an independent committee – although no date has been set.
