An In-Depth Look At The Wales C Squad And The Team That Might Start Against England

Mark Jones has plenty to consider and weigh up after naming his latest Wales ‘C’ squad earlier today.

Jones has two weeks in which to select his starting team before facing England in Salford on Tuesday 19th March.

The Wales ‘C’ manager has 21 players to select from, although it is understood a 22nd player, Barry Town’s Jonathan Hood, had to withdraw to personal commitments prior to the announcement.

The most surprising name to feature on that list is Jake Phillips, who is the sole representative of WPL league leaders Connah’s Quay. To date, the full-back has started just three WPL games this season having spent the first-half of the season out on loan at Bangor City in Tier 2.

Amongst those not selected, you could argue a case for the inclusion of Caernarfon Town’s goalscoring left-back Nathan Craig – which looks even stranger considering Jake Phillips made the cut – and Cofis supporters might also be calling for the inclusion of their flying winger Darren Thomas.

Surprisingly, the squad also lacks an out-and-out right-back or right-sided wingback – certainly one which plays that role week-in, week-out domestically – and it will be intriguing to see what Mark Jones has up his sleeve in regard to this.

On the whole however, the squad is about right and doesn’t stray too far away from what most people would’ve had in mind.

From looking at the personnel selected, it would seem Jones wants to base his team around the back-three. He has four recognised central defenders selected and it might be Llandudno’s Kai Edwards who misses out on a starting spot with Nathan Peate, a strong dominant defender perhaps being the free man to come and attack balls going into the box and experienced Emlyn Lewis to his right, with his left-sided Cardiff Met teammate Joel Edwards giving the back three a nice balance on the left.

Behind the defence, I expect Ashley Morris to be get the nod as goalkeeper based on his experience with Alex Ramsey deputising.

The full-back/wing-back options are certainly going to be an area of interest with there not being a recognised right-back in the squad. It will be difficult Chris Hugh on the left despite young Callum Roberts quietly impressing at Newtown.

The right option is clearly a grey area and at risk of coming a cropper trying to second-guess Mark Jones, I have a hunch he might turn to Robbie Patten, usually a central midfielder at Barry Town, to lock down the right-hand side.

Playing a back three would allow Jones to utilise one of the strengths of his squad – his trio of proven quality central midfielders which should compliment one another nicely. Henry Jones will give width and should combine well with Hugh giving Wales a dangerous attacking outlet down the left, Aeron Edwards has done it all domestically with The New Saints and is a responsible ‘two-way’ to coin an ice-hockey phrase, player. Chris Venables is cut from similar cloth in terms of pedigree and experience – with some work on the training ground, the pair here could operate on a pivot allowing them to also contribute to the final third with Patten providing added stability and the ability on the right.

Aberystwyth’s Matthew Jones a lively left-sided midfielder, who could also be utilised to give some freshness. I don’t foresee Danny Brockwell getting a start but that rests on the fact I am anticipating Wales not to play with direct wingers rather than a measure of his performances this season, and should Wales be chasing the game, his pace and dynamism could be used as a welcome addition off the substitutions.

That leaves four players vying for the two more spots and one of the major headaches I believe Mark Jones will have is whether to accommodate Kayne McLaggon into his team. My gut feeling is that he’ll opt for the Cardiff Met duo of Adam Roscrow, who has been in scintillating form this season with Eliot Evans buzzing around behind him, getting into pockets of space centrally or down the right to to try and unpick England’s defence.
