Netminder Joe Myers, nicknamed ‘dead puck’ by team-mates, has agreed to return to Cardiff Fire’s line-up for the 2017-18 season.

Cardiff-born Myers, the brother of Devils forward Matthew, starts his third season with Fire.

The 29-year-old joined Fire in their formation season and has been an outstanding member of the team, sharing netminding duties with Luke Takel.

In his first season with Fire he finished with a 93 per cent save average and followed that with an even better 94 per cent average.

Myers’ experience can’t be questioned, having spent eight years in Elite League ice hockey with Cardiff Devils and Breahead Clan plus spells in the English Premier at London Raiders and Slough Jets.

“I’m delighted Joe is back for another year,” says Fire head coach Mark Cuddihy. “He’s been great with us and has really bought in to what we have been trying to achieve.

“His experience is invaluable and I lean on him for that quite a lot. He’s great in the dressing room, well respected and he can help us win games.

“As we move into the new era for Fire in the second tier of UK ice hockey having players like Joe is imperative.

“We know we’re in for a tough season and we’re all going to learn a lot in the next few months so Joe is key to what we’re trying to do. He is a huge help to all the players and great in training for us.

Having Joe back was really important to me and I’m delighted we’ve managed to keep him.”

Myers joins Brad Watchorn, Tamas Elias, Sam Bryant, Alex Symonds, Sam Smith, Callum Buglass and Great Britain under-20 international Michael Stratford in the Fire team.

They have stepped up to the second tier National Ice Hockey League for 2017-18.
