New Glamorgan head coach Robert Croft is convinced England will soon become the best one-day team in the world – despite their setback in South Africa.

Croft – who has just returned from a month with England as a bowling consultant – believes the strides made under skipper Eoin Morgan are taking the three lions to the top.

Most importantly, the former Test spinner reckons the egos of past players have been replaced by a common goal.

“You never get the impression any more than anyone is out there just for their own ends,” said Croft ahead of next month’s World T20 in India.

“There is a collective goal. They are all there to make the team as good as they can possibly be.

“They are buying into what the team is about and I see them becoming the number one team in the world. They have the tools in that team to win competitions.”

Croft spent four weeks working with England head coach Trevor Bayliss and captain Morgan and insists they have become fearless, despite their 3-2 one-day series defeat.

“From what I saw in South Africa, the beauty with England was the simplicity. They had full trust in their players who were under no illusions what the ambition was but they were allowed to play.

“England are excellent. They have a very good balance at the top and Eoin Morgan comes across as a very good leader and knows what he wants. The style of play is no fear and what was impressive was the different styles of play in their first two victories.

“It just seems that the transition is easier now when you are a young player coming into the England squad.

“There is a very comfortable nature about the group of players and the support staff. It is a relaxed, but ambitious group.

“Relaxed does not mean they are not switched on to their game, it means they are encouraged to believe in their abilities and not worry about failing.”
